There are known knowns.
These are things we know that we know.
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
There are things that we know we don't know.
But there are also unknown unknowns.
These are things we don't know we don't know.
I guess the only remaining epistemological question would be -
' how do we know we don't know what we don't know?'
this little philosophical diversion was stated
in response to questions about the atrocities
at Abu Graib
it highlights for me the gulf
between those who wield power
and those who suffer at the hands
of those who wield power
violence writes its own policy
and thus 'truth' is negotiable
any news of man's inhumanity
must turn the conscious soul
inward
to reflect upon complicity

i remember that rumsfeld quote
i am also reminded
of something i heard my advisor say
in a talk he gave at the
seismological society of america meeting
back in april 2006
he coined a new monetary unit
that he called "the rumsfeld"
it was a unit of money
equal to the amount of money
spent on the war in irad
in one day
he then went on to show
how far one "rumsfeld" would go
if it were spent instead
on earthquake research
or on implementing
a tsunami warning system
for the indian ocean
