Every Form Is A Vestige

every form is a vestige
or a ray of
creative intelligence
imprinted at the heart
of creative being

said jacques maritain
to my mind this morning

nothing is exempt
fated to form
and formlessness
like lava
and then to form
and be withered
by the wind

every vestige is a former form
a piece of form
like the broken eye
of an abandoned plastic doll
dangling near the jotsam and flipsam
the refuse
of daily survival

the human intellect is then
a vestige
of god's mind

imprinted in the heart
acting in the continual molding
of the form of his love

i like the image of lava
it makes me want to go back
to Hawaii, to the big island
where the lava is fresh
with a shiny crust like
a pan of fresh brownies
and the intricate details
of the flow patterns can be seen
in the ropy pahoehoe texture

being there makes me want
to make a map showing
which way each little tongue
of lava flowed
how it pooled up here
and then flowed around
an obstacle

why? what would be the point?
i don't know
maybe just to have the pleasure
of reading the story
and finding it to be coherent
or maybe there is a sense
of communion that comes
from seeing the lava flow
in all its glorious detail
and from understanding something
about that detail
here is something that is trying
to tell me its story
i am not alone in the universe
this lava flow is trying
to talk to me

maybe the whole universe
has a story it is trying to tell
for those who will take
the time and effort to listen

there is a pleasure
in examining the details
of a lava fow
and there is also a pleasure
in abandoning that and
running down the slope
following the flow
to see where it goes
to see where it will take me
a natural labyrinth of sorts

there is much more
in your entry to reflect on
but this image of the lava flow
will keep me going for a while
