nomadic lyrics

at a loss today
what to post
i choose to give some print
to a poet who
came to me
by way of a friend

SONG OF THE MOON

I dropped into my ink
the rays of the silver moon.
And their quality shone
within the shining picture of eternity.

I wove the rays of the storytelling moon
onto the tip of my vision.
And I sewed my poem-children
with a perfect silken thread.

I struck the crystal of the nephrite moon
unto my hardened heart.
And, in the darkness, there streamed from my poetry
rays of jade.

I placed my song of grace
before the mirror of the wise moon.
And my poem, with its shining soul,
dwelt in the light of Shambhala.

Gombojav MEND-OOYO (MONGOLIA)
translation by - Simon Wickham-Smith

.....I do hope that Mend -Ooyo will not mind me
giving some access to others
the beauty of his words on this blog
so that they might be edified by his spirit

the CD of buddhist lectures by Pema Chodron
and her book of commentary
on Tibetan buddhist slogans
that i have been perusing
are from the shambala tradition
of Tibetan buddhism

i guess i shouldn't be surprised
that that word would show up
in a Mongolian poem

i looked it up on wikipedia
it refers to a mythical kingdom
in the Himalaya
(the story of Shangri-La told
in the novel Lost Horizon
was partly based on this myth)

From wikipedia:
"Although Chögyam Trungpa, founder of Shambhala International, came out of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, in his teachings Shambhala Vision has its own independent basis in human wisdom that does not belong to East or West or any one culture or religion. Shambhala kingdom is seen as enlightened society that people of all faiths can aspire to and actually realize. The path to this is provocatively described as the practice of warriorship — meeting fear and transcending aggression, and of secular sacredness — joining the wisdom of the past and one's own culture with the present in nowness."

this sounds to me
not too far removed
from Rev. Martin Luther King Jr's
dream of the beloved community

thanks for sharing the poem

i don't have a wikepedia
instinct yet

but when i typed the word
i was curious about it
i had heard it before
but had no knowledge
no inkling
but i sensed from the context of the poem
it was somehow linked to the
eternity he speaks of
in other poems

it's (the book) still by my bed
often a final thought
before sleep
