with the death of george carlin
it occured to me
that his brand of humor is
decidedly catholic
i recall giggling to no end
when i first heard and saw him
on television in the '70s
my noncatholic friends were unimpressed
given that this blog is at least to some degree
aimed at epistemological discourse
i thought it apt to publish
a piece he wrote in
WHEN WILL JESUS BRING THE PORK CHOPS?
( i presume to publish this with the justification that
it is a private matter for me and will perchance only
briefly if at all make its way to the public sphere
should i make some money on the deal i'll send it to his family)
NINETY-NINE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
There are 99 things you need to know
1) there are more than 99 things you need to know
2) nobody knows how many things there are to know
3) it's more than three
4) there is no way of knowing how many things you need to know
5) some of the the things you need to know are things you already know
6) some of the things you need to know are things you only think you know
7) some of the things you need to know are things you used to know and then forgot
8) some of the things you need to know are things you only thought you forgot
and actually still know
9) some of the things you need to know are things you know but don't really know you know
10) some of the things you need to know are things you don't yet know you need to know
11) some of the things you need to know are things you probably don't really need to know
12) some of the things you need to know are things known by people you don't know
13) some of the things you need to know are things nobody knows
14) some of the things you need to know are things that are unknowable
15) some of the things you need to know are things that can only be imagined
16) at any given time the list of things you need to know can abruptly be suspended
now you know
may his soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed
rest in peace
eternal rest grant unto him o lord
and let perpetual light shine upon him
amen

maybe george carlin
was the inspiration
for whoever it was
that wrote that book
"all i ever needed to know
i learned in kindergarden"
Or as John likes to say,
"All I ever needed to know
I didn't"
