"the dark dane"
regarded in some circles
as the first "existentialist" philosopher
his preoccupation was the plight of man in the world
"what ability there is in an individual may be
measured by the yardstick of how far there is
between his understanding and his will. what a
person can understand he must also be able to
force himself to will. between understanding and willing
is where excuses and evasions have their being."
-from K's JOURNALS
i read this in the final short story of guy vanderhaeghe's
collection MAN DESCENDING
i read these stories 20 years ago
and they come back to me now
fresh and amazing
as if i read them now for the first time
all the stories seem to explore that region
between what is understood and what
a person wills to do in the world
his novels are also great
and to be highly recommended
