scents and knowledge

who is in my room
or
what is that
when i walk into my cell i smell
what
the narcissus yes that's it
phew
i love that smell it is overwhelming
like only one or two other things i know
i am fascinated with the lascivious growth
upward upward green stalks strong and urgent and
lovely white blooms
a community of blooms on top

i am inclined to think of a woman's perfume
but i resist that
better to stare out the window at the white snow
or
read a book
these days John Berger - from A to X a story in love letters

no other poems assassinate me
i am thrown down with my own words
devastated by the reality of words
impaled like a martyr on the impersonal spear
of a cognitive groan
i like the narcissus bloom
it reeks of hope
it reeks of something i dare not define
and i will not confess the moment
of being wrapped like a vine thread
perching on the edge of a petal
around the green turgid stalk of
this lovely narcissus

this narcissus and i
we stare down winter
we're already calling to
the crocuses

flowers!

I can't wait for spring. It's 3 degrees here and dropping. It's so cold I feel insane.

I get overwhelmed when things grow. Their idea is to get as big as quick as possible to reach the sunlight.

Do you think that God designed orchids, or that they are responding to some divine law?

Or do you think that it's just some kind of messy evolutionary process, all that beauty?

kirby--could it be all of the above?

the kingdom of God is like seed
that a farmer scatters on the ground
and he sleeps and he wakes
and it grows without his knowing how

maybe God designed the universe to be fruitful
maybe he placed within the matter
that he created the potential
to grow and to evolve

nobody does beauty
like the big designer
in the sky

i'm looking at it this way these days:

for all our explorations of space and seeking out the possibility of life somewhere else in the universe for all we know earth is it

we have no knowledge beyond some speculations of people who have seen UFOs and have communicated with beings not of this earth and lord knows we do well to take them seriously
so

we have this little speck of dust with an almost perfect climate modulation for sustaining growth and survival...and what's more it is imbued with beauty with something we can replicate or imitate..but we can honor that beauty

so i think we need to see things more like an art project rather than an empirical given -- this way whatever we do would more naturally conform to the natural beauty given to us

the orchid was created beautiful by god and we are following or responding to divine law when we behold the orchid...the law of universal apprehension of beauty
the one
the true
the simple
the beautiful
or am i complicating things?

where there is wrecklessness in using or apprehending the beauty of the world there is usually a marked degree of atheism at work

the humble assessment and the true assessment i feel is
we understand far less than what know

there is intelligence in the designs
and we're stupid for denying that

"we understand far less than what we know we know"

or what is out there adn potentially knowable is far grander in scale than what we know now- that might be a better way to put it

;=}

that's what i set out to say
