ordinary time

waking as i always am
merely awaking
each day a bit more awake than the previous
each day a bit more disturbed
by what is taken for reality
what is perceived
what is ignored

i awaken into time that is ordinary
ordinary for me
a morning of near unconscious prayer
dutiful prayer
prayer nonetheless
and
to the ear shattering piercing warbling
melody of a robin
who seemed to delight in her own echo
off the building
more fascinated each time
with the contours of her song
and laughing a time or two, too
just to assure herself that her song
is really hers
that sort of ordinariness

i blink myself awake into the awakened consciousness of
6 billion other souls who are walking or driving
or shuffling about somewhere somehow focussed
on the activity of survival or pleasure or both
ordinary shuffling about of humanity
each day
millions of people moving fast

i go with the slow ones
i learn to walk with the slow going nowhere
of ordinary life
there's a rhythm there
there's a sanctity there

trying to listen in an ordinary way
to the ordinary sounds
of the ordinary words

stepping to humming
to the nothing special song
of the ordinary time

trenchwork
mopping
sweeping the streets
taxi feeding
sweetening the day with music
ordinary music for ordinary
full timers

beauty most deeply seen
in the delicate balance of the
everyday

i do the ordinary dance
in the ordinary way
to the ordinary rhythm
of the ordinary day

how extroardinarily ordinary

the rhythmic beat of
your last four lines
make me envision
the next new dance craze--
the ordinary dance

i picture a hip hop dance ensemble
or line dancers at a country bar
stomping out the rhythm
of the ordinary dance

but i turn now
to the lilt of the robin's song
i'll take that with me
on this second day
of ordinary time

they called karl rahner
a mystic of everyday life

that was the persistent claim in
SPIRIT IN THE WORLD
i read a few big chunks of that tome in the arid zone
by the san pedro

rahner insisted that
we can only look for evidence of christ's being in the world within the context of the everyday

why this idea of the mystical being like a fantasy world of enchantment
what about the natural glimmering
strangeness and beauty of every day

he went so far as to say
the amazing tone of the gospels
lends itself to that insight
that indeed all things are new
on any given day

one school of biblical scholarship holds that
the spring fertility rituals were the acknowledgement that creation happens again and again every year
they were'nt concerned at all with establishing some sort of proof text for the beginning of the natural world
they were simply acknowledging as deeply as they could with some startling rituals that they were indeed a part of the passionate renewal the consistent renewal of the world with god's grace with his beauty

the planting the cultivating the harvest of life is all of a piece and it is really amazing

rahner also made a point of seeing this renewal this miracle in the faces of people artists who create minds that write books scientists who go through VOILA moments musicians in the midst of great expression

it corresponds to my theory of deep time
which i don't think about too much anymore

one of the great montana ladies whom i used to serenade when i go out there has passed away
i'm in the mood for writin a lonely happy cowgirl tune of a smilin cowgirl ridin off into the sunset..she died on sunday

hitch your saddle up tight now shirley
point that bay mare to the west
gallup on off to the sunset
now your long bright day is blest

montana cowgirls don't die they just become part of the sparkle of sunset
i swear they do

ordinarily yrs
