upon seeing a film twice
i first watched the Coen brothers film No Country For Old Men
in a theatre in Helena MT
the mood in the space was so intent
that all humor was lost
even the humorous line
about the loose killer
"you might say he has no sense of humor"
was lost on the folks i sat with
mesmerized
literally
by the stark and quiet cruelty
of interior and exterior landscapes
the second viewing was in Waite Park MN
and there there was a rather ribald and
engaged audience of amazement and laughter
at jokes
quite a few deadpan one liners
which
if one is too engaged in the
literary ability of Cormac McCarthy
(or the film artistry of Joel an Ethan COen)
one will miss of course the sublime sense
of comedy
he weaves through the human hell of desperation
and futility
there was even a funny joke
when the silent credits began
the name of the music director
was displayed
of course
if one hangs in there
till the end of the credits
one will hear an interesting
postlude
man
why can't i get those gigs?
best film so far
of the 21st century

It's true. No country for old guys could be filed under "comedy." It's not just deadpan it's well beyond the grave and back again pan. Lifepan. Looking forward to seeing it again.
